Virtual Mentor Mixer May 7 – 8 in Member Connection: Women in Engineering & Effective Communication

Join SAE Membership for a special virtual mentoring event in the Open Forum of Member Connection May 7 – 8. Mentors and mentees will be able to discuss being a woman in the mobility industry, as well as how to effectively communicate in the workplace.

Six women from varying career stages will be available over the course of those two days to answer your questions and share their experiences:

  1. Emily Anthony, Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc
  2. Dr. Elana Chapman, GM Global Technical Center
  3. Maura Chmielowiec, General Motors
  4. Kinsey Olson Sovern, Chair of Dayton Section
  5. Dr. Andrea Strzelec, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  6. Cora Taylor, MS Student, Michigan Technological University

As mentor hosts, they came up with a few questions to get the conversation started, such as:

“What do you feel are the biggest challenges facing women in the automotive industry?”

“Unfortunately, women are often accused of being bossy when trying to lead a group or share an opinion, especially in a male dominated field (I had this experience at times while being president of my FSAE team). How do you handle these accusations and leading groups in order to maintain respect, and complete tasks at hand?”

“What age did you first consider STEM important to you and how so, and by contrast, what age made the difference in ultimately choosing a STEM field, and why?”

There are more thoughtful questions to think about, which you can find on the Virtual Mentor Mixer page. And while we encourage you to enroll as a mentor or mentee in Member Connection, enrollment is not required to participate in this event.
